Fantastic Planet

Join me for my very first solo show during the Lower Haight Winter Art Walk!

In Fantastic Planet, Jenna Melnyk explores the theme of destabilization through a series of hanging and freestanding ceramic sculptures. Her imaginative works transform recognizable natural forms— plants, sea creatures, and worms — into strange, otherworldly beings. Drawing inspiration from the cult animated film that is this show’s namesake, Melnyk creates her own vivid scenes. In a time of political and environmental uncertainty, Fantastic Planet highlights the beauty and fragility of our collective reality— at once familiar, yet profoundly surreal.

Hardly Softer

Ceramics and textiles are often relegated to the realms of maker fairs and hobby clubs. But how might the nuances of curation and contextual clues influence our perception of these mediums? Through a playful blend of surreal household items and abstract creations, artists Amy Lange, Jenna Melnyk, Philippa Renshaw, and Joanne Wang challenge the assumed domesticity of their favorite mediums. ‘Hardly Softer’ asks the viewer to step into a world where form and function are fluid, inviting a reconsideration of the traditional roles these materials play in our lives.

Family Affair

Family Affair

There are many things we inherit from our families. In mine, creativity was emphasized as a core value and skillset. Growing up, I was surrounded by relatives who were all exploring different mediums. I sat wide eyed as artists, musicians, and writers sat around our family table discussing their passions. I’ve often wondered if creativity is a trait that runs in other families too. “Family Affair” is about connecting these intergenerational threads of expression. During the open call, artists are invited to submit one piece that is riffing off of something made by a relative. New original works will be displayed side by side with the work that inspired them. It is up to each artist to interpret what this means to them. It could be as abstract as a feeling or a literal as a color.

The Art of Giving and Receiving

The Art of Giving and Receiving is about looking deeply into the present as artists as providers of intrinsic value to others in this time of need.

Presented in a pop-up gallery opening format over Zoom, the exhibition features works by renowned and emerging artists from Minnesota Street Project Artist Studios and Pacific Felt Factory, two collectives of San Francisco Bay Area-based artists committed to supporting one another in this time of need. Amidst uncertainty and systemic dismantle of cultural norms, the works in Contributions: The Art of Giving and Receiving demonstrate creativity, solidarity and mutual trust.

Quarantined: A Virtual Pop-up Art Exhibit

The exhibition QUARANTINED is about the ways in which artists deploy art to explore their roles as social actors in times of isolation. Borrowed from Italian 'quaranta giorni,' literally 'space of forty days,' — period a ship suspected of carrying disease is kept in isolation, the title contemplates the potential of art and offers a provocation to the public to exert their own social influence in the rapidly changing world.
